NSW residents brace for gusts, floods

RESIDENTS along the NSW mid-north coast are bracing for wind gusts and flooding, as the clean-up from bad weather across the state continues.

Strong winds, which hit Forster-Tuncurry late last night, are expected to reach Coffs Harbour early this morning before moving on to the Queensland border by this afternoon.

The weather bureau is expecting sea flooding to inundate low-lying coastal areas on the mid-north coast and the Northern Rivers tonight.

Surf conditions are forecast to be dangerous today right along the NSW coast as wind gusts reach up to 93km/h.

Emergency crews and electricians were busy last night removing fallen trees and restoring power from the south coast to the Hunter.

As midnight (AEST) approached, energy supplier Ausgrid was working to reconnect 4000 homes and businesses in Bonnet Bay in Sydney’s south, Terrey Hills in the city’s north and around Lake Munmorah on the central coast.

On the south coast and in the southern highlands, Endeavour Energy technicians were working to connect several hundred premises in village townships.

Bad weather has also disrupted transport, with hundreds of Jetstar passengers waiting to board postponed flights to Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Ferry services on Sydney Harbour have been suspended, with winds of up to 74km/h expected to produce 1.5-metre swells.

Minor flooding occurred in Sydney’s south, with the Woronora and Cooks rivers peaking shortly after 9pm (AEST) yesterday.

Strong winds caused havoc in Sydney yesterday afternoon, with shop awnings felled in Bondi, scaffolding knocked down in Maroubra and metal sheeting blown across Canterbury Road at Canterbury during peak hour.
