NSW police launch crackdown on Anzac hoons

NSW police have warned of a major crackdown on antisocial behaviour this Anzac Day, with officers enforcing booze-free zones and targeting drunk drivers.

Almost 300 people were arrested across the state on Anzac Day 2011, with 173 assaults recorded – including two serious glassings at a Sydney RSL club

Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch says officers will be out in force on Wednesday as crowds gather to remember the fallen.

“Criminal and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated,” Mr Murdoch said in a statement on Monday.

“Anyone who attempts to disrupt Anzac Day events can expect to be arrested, ejected, or moved on quickly.”

Mr Murdoch warned of random breath testing in the vicinity of major Anzac Day events.

“Both marked and unmarked police vehicles will be patrolling all major roads and back streets, so if you take the risk and drink drive, you will be caught,” he said.

Alcohol-free zones will be policed across Sydney’s CBD.

A number of roads in the city centre will be closed to make way for the Anzac Day march and people are encouraged to use public transport.
