NSW police detain 13 teens in CBD blitz

Thirteen teenagers have been detained by Sydney police during a blitz on underage drinking in the CBD.

During the five-hour operation from 9pm to 2am (AEST) on Saturday, police targeted youth who were out late at night without supervision.

Twelve of the 13 teens nabbed were under 16 years of age and many were under the influence of alcohol, police said.

“Some of the children were totally unaware of what danger they were putting themselves in, including possibly becoming involved in a serious crime, the nature of city traffic and the freezing weather conditions,” City Central Commander, Superintendent Mark Walton, said in a statement on Monday.

“When contacted by police a number of parents didn’t know their child was in the city, some believed they were with other family members and others were meant to be at home while their parents were at work.”

Those teenagers who were unable to be collected by their parents or guardians were taken back to their homes by police.

The operation is the fifth of its kind that has targeted youth drinking and antisocial behaviour.
