A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman was found buried in her parents’ backyard, southwest of Sydney.
The body of Colleen Deborah Ayers, 33, was discovered in a shallow grave at the large property in Lakesland, a rural suburb bordering the Nattai National Park, on Friday.
Detectives made the grim find as they investigated a break-in and theft of firearms and jewels from the home in early May.
Detective Inspector Russell Oxford said Ms Ayers’ parents returned home from holiday on May 25 and discovered their property had been burgled.
They also reported their daughter missing.
“The tragedy is that they’ve come home and not realised their daughter has been buried in their backyard,” Det Insp Oxford told Fairfax media.
Police were tipped off about the location of the body after arresting a 22-year-old woman on Thursday in connection with the theft.
She was charged with aggravated break and enter with intent to steal in company and appeared at Campbelltown Local Court on Friday.
She was remanded in custody and to appear in the same court on July 23.
Thirty-two-year-old Michael Duffy, who was charged with murdering Ms Ayers and breaking into the Lakesland home, was refused bail when he appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
A man and a woman aged 21 and 22 respectively have also been charged over the burglary.
Two other people – a 38-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl – were arrested but released without charge.
