A mayor in Sydney’s south has asked his fellow councillors to host a “balls and boobs barbecue” after a tumour was discovered on one on his testicles.
Hurstville City Council Mayor Steve McMahon wants a provocatively titled event to inspire more men to check their health.
“I have proposed council host a ‘balls and boobs barbecue’ for cancer,” he said in a statement.
“Yes, the name is a little provocative but so is the disease.”
After a series of tests Councillor McMahon, a father of two, revealed the grim news on Wednesday and is scheduled to have surgery next week.
“Following the discovery of a small lump, and much nagging by my wife, I reluctantly went to the doctor,” he said.
“It was a decision that probably saved my life.”
A majority of Hurstville councillors are donating their recent 2.5 per cent increase in allowances towards a cancer awareness campaign.
Former federal Labor leader Mark Latham and American cyclist Lance Armstrong are among the well-known survivors of testicular cancer.
