NSW Govt defends staff turnover rate

The NSW Government has defended its staff turnover rate, saying it’s not due to a morale crisis.

Almost 60 ministerial staff have left jobs in the O’Farrell Government during its first 15 months in office, Opposition Labor MP Walt Secord says.

“There is nothing unusual about this,” a spokesman for the Premier said in a statement.

“In a new government, it’s quite normal for a number of staff to be employed for the transition.

“They leave as new full-time staff come on board.”

But Mr Secord says the turnover rate is signalling a morale crisis in the O’Farrell camp.

“This is an extraordinary figure – we see 59 out of 167 ministerial staff have left the ministerial offices since April 1, 2011,” Mr Secord said in a statement on Saturday.

“For any large organisation, these figures would set off the alarm – this high turnover shows a morale crisis.

“Given NSW’s tough economic times, it is very surprising that ministerial staff are fleeing to enter an uncertain job market.”
