The NSW government has been accused of planning to slash more than $100 million from dam safety funding in the aftermath of heavy floods.
Opposition water spokesman Luke Foley has cited a report by the State Water Corporation, the operator of 21 dams in rural NSW, which was recently tabled in parliament.
He says the report shows capital expenditure on dam safety upgrades will be slashed over the coming decade as part of the O’Farrell government’s dividend requirements.
“This document reveals that State Water has been forced to revise its 10-year business forecasts,” he told ABC Radio on Monday.
“It’s very worrying at a time people are battling record floods but the government’s taking $110 million away from dam safety upgrade expenditure.”
The State Water Corporation’s statement of corporate intent also warns that many NSW dams no longer comply with NSW Dam Safety Committee standards, Mr Foley says.
Comment was being sought from the government.
