NSW Farmers welcome coal seam gas report

A NSW government report into coal seam gas is an important step forward in protecting farmers’ property rights, NSW Farmers say.

The report by a parliamentary committee, which conducted an in-depth study into the coal seam gas industry, recommended that CSG exploration continue in NSW but that no new licences be issued until a “comprehensive” regulatory framework was in place.

It called for tightening of the draft code of practice for CSG exploration, a continuation of the ban on fracking and a requirement that companies enter an access agreement with landholders for CSG production.

It also adopted a number of NSW Farmers’ recommendations, including requirements for baseline data collection and chemical testing.

Under the current draft plan, nearly 1.5 million hectares in the New England and Hunter have been classed as high-value farmland, but mining and exploration is not banned on that land.

A rally was held in Sydney on Tuesday in which a diverse group of protesters descended on parliament chanting, “Protect our water, protect our land”.

NSW Farmers President Fiona Simson said the committee’s investigation was a step that should have been taken before a single license was granted.

“Instead, we are in the unfortunate position of trying to decide what to do with a horse that has already bolted,” Ms Simson said.

The association has called on the O’Farrell government to implement the recommendations as a matter of urgency.
