NSW farmers ask for extra help with floods

Farmers are asking the state government for extra help dealing with the floods in northern NSW.

The NSW Farmers’ Association says landholders right across the state’s north have been affected, with many still recovering from floods in 2011.

“Since then they have seen continued rain and now this event has created a severe situation with impacts on the viability of farm businesses,” association president Fiona Simson said in a statement on Friday.

“The compounding affect is likely to cause disruption beyond the current season.

“We’ve got cotton and summer crop farmers out there watching their harvest slowly drown – not to mention the problems it is going to have for the upcoming winter season.”

Serious flooding began on NSW’s north coast last week.

Since Wednesday the state’s northwest has borne the brunt of the inundations.

NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner visited the region on Friday and pledged assistance.

He said aircraft were being employed to help with relocation of livestock and to carry out fodder drops.

“The flooding is causing extensive damage to a range of agriculture industries, with cropping, livestock, horticulture and dairy industries all hit hard by the heavy rain,” Mr Stoner said in a statement.
