The NSW government will appoint a new victims’ commissioner with powers to investigate and improve the state’s criminal justice system.
The NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith told Fairfax the commissioner would be a “real champion for victims” and would help oversee a more streamlined support system.
He acknowledged there were “rifts between individual victim support advocates”.
There are currently four support groups representing families who have been hit by homicide.
The Fairfax report claimed three of these groups were locked in a funding dispute with the state’s fourth and largest group, the Homicide Victims Support Group, which received the most government funding.
