NSW budget to include utilities boost

NSW householders can look forward to a $210 million package designed to assist with rising utility costs when the state budget is handed down on Tuesday.

The government will deliver $75 a year to offset electricity bills from July 1, rising to $150 a year in 2014, News Limited reports.

The rebate will reportedly go to more than 540,000 families on less than $150,000 a year.

More than 700,000 families with household earnings of less than $60,000 will receive extra help through the NSW government’s low income household rebate, which rises to $215 from July 1, and will increase to $235 by 2014.

The handouts are being paid for by the merger of the state’s three electricity distributors.

Sydney Water systems across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra will get $380 million for maintenance and upgrades.

The budget will also increase the emergency voucher scheme to $14.9 million to help households stay connected to power during tough financial times.
