The New South Wales Government will use today’s state budget to fire a shot over the bow of the Commonwealth.
Treasurer Mike Baird will hand down the first budget from a Coalition Government in NSW since 1994.
The budget will include an announcement of increased NSW mining royalties, to punish the Federal Government because of the expected impact of the carbon tax.
Other details of the budget have also leaked well ahead of Mr Baird’s midday speech, including yesterday’s revelation the budget will be going into deficit.
Mr Baird says what the Government is doing is fiscally responsible.
“Fundamentally the key message that I want to get to the community of NSW is that our finances are getting back in order,” Mr Baird said.
“Financial recklessness is something that can never be entertained. We will have financial responsibility at our core.”
The budget papers will also include $4.7 billion for hospital upgrades and a small increase to power bills to help pay for the Solar Bonus Scheme.
“There are some measures in the budget that won’t be met with universal acclaim,” Mr Baird concedes.
Shadow treasurer Michael Daley has repeated the Opposition’s warning of major pain, particularly for those employed in the public sector.
“They promised us economic reform and all they are delivering in this budget is deficit and debt,” Mr Daley said.
“He’s sacking thousands of workers, slashing programs and he still can’t keep the budget in the black.
“This is a budget that will be without heart.”
