NRA no longer the final word on the ‘gun control’ message, thanks to Robin Kelly

The Chicago Tribune endorsed the candidacy over the weekend of Robin Kelly for the 2nd Illinois Congressional district for the special general election being held on Tuesday, April 9 to fill the seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr. Robin Kelly emerged victorious from a crowded and talented Democratic field, making “gun violence a cornerstone of her campaign.” In that primary campaign and the general election campaign, Robin Kelly has become the counterbalance to the National Rifle Association (NRA). In a report published yesterday in the Indiana News and Tribune, the two United States Senators from Indiana (a Republican and a Democrat) conceded that they are committed to preventing “such events as Newtown” in the future.

The nation learned during the nationally followed campaign that this candidate, Robin Kelly, had an “F” rating from the NRA, and surprisingly, some of her opponents had “A” ratings from the NRA. Robin Kelly put forth an effective and passionate message that gun violence had to stop and we had to do something.

With some help from “New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg who helped her by dumping $2 million into the race to showcase Kelly’s anti-gun positions,” Robin Kelly has become a player on the issue of “gun control” on the national stage.

Robin Kelly has also become the “face” and the “voice” for those faceless, voiceless people that are impacted by gun violence on a daily basis not only in Chicago, but across our nation.

For a very long time, the NRA had it all when it came to the issue of “gun control” legislation.” The NRA was the “face” and the “voice” on the “gun control” issue.

The NRA knew best.

In 1994, when the Federal Assault Weapons ban passed, it was significantly watered down thanks to intense lobbying by the NRA. The NRA knew that it did not have a close friend at the time in the White House, so watering down the bill was the best strategy. With a ten-year sunset, the NRA waited its turn and made sure the bill never saw the light of day again.

They also had a friend in the White House: President George W. Bush. Even if that bill had managed through the minefields planted by the NRA, George W. Bush was the backup plan. The default option just in case it slipped through.

When President Obama was elected in 2008, the issue of “gun control” was non-existent. Obama’s first term had little in the way of gun legislation, yet the NRA stayed relevant by pumping out a message saying that President Obama wanted to take “your guns away.”

The 2012 campaign was much the same, briefly coming up during the Obama-Romney debates in which both candidates sloughed off the issue. This in spite of a number of mass shootings in 2012 such as the “Colorado shootings” in Aurora at a movie theater on July 20, 2012 killing twelve and injuring fifty-eight.

It was not until December 14, 2012 in which the Sandy Hook shootings occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. A shocked nation learned that day that six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School were killed and twenty children, ages six to seven years old, were brutally gunned down by a crazed gunman.

The issue of “gun control” is back on the table, thanks in large part to the campaign of Robin Kelly in the 2nd Illinois Congressional district.
