Rany Mostafa (TCP) : The Salafist Al Nour Party has won 10 seats in the run-off vote of the first round of Egypt’s parliamentary elections, party’s spokesperson Nader Bakar announced.
“I congratulate all fellow party members who secured parliament seats in constituencies in Matrouh, Giza, Beheira and Beni Suef governorates. I hope they work on benefiting the people and serving their country,” Bakar said in his Twitter account.
Initial results of the run-off vote carried out Tuesday and Wednesday showed that 10 Al Nour party candidates reached the 50 percent plus one majority vote required to win the seats in their constituencies.
The said figures are unofficial results informed by media correspondents who attended the vote-counting at the close of polling stations Wednesday night. The official results are to be announced Friday, the High Elections Committee said Monday.
In recent months, secular political parties’ figures and talk show presenters have called for the dissolution of the Al Nour party allegedly for being established on religious basis in violation of the 2014 constitution.
The party held at least 25 per cent of seats in the 2012 Islamist-dominated parliament formed during the reign of former President Mohamed Morsi, but Al Nour Party lost all 75 party-based seats in the first round to the ‘For the Love of Egypt’ electoral list.
The runoffs saw 418 independent candidates competing for 209 seats in 99 constituencies.
