Not much for Qld in federal budget

Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls says the 2012 federal budget contains “little or no gain” for the Sunshine State.

The budget includes no new infrastructure funds for Queensland, despite the state providing a substantial proportion of revenue derived from the mineral resources rent tax, he says.

“We see $2.3 billion made available to NSW for the Pacific Highway to prop up Rob Oakeshott and two marginal Labor seats, but we don’t see any funding for the flood-prone Bruce Highway,” he told AAP.

Specific purpose payments that funded many of the community services delivered by the state government would be reduced by $2.5 billion, he said.

The federal government had broken its promise to reduce the company tax rate, hurting Queensland’s tourism, retail and agriculture sectors and impeding the state government’s ability to deliver cost of living relief to families, Mr Nicholls said.

He will be joined by former prime minister John Howard at a post-budget breakfast in Brisbane on Wednesday.
