Norway killer Anders Behring Breivik barred from reading ‘new manifesto’ in court

On Friday, Breivik said he was not nervous, but complained to his lawyers that
he had been distracted by too many police interviews to complete his
presentation.

“He feels that he should have had some more time,” Mr Gron said. “He
would have like to be a little bit more prepared.”

When Breivik comes into the courtroom on Monday, he will be allowed to carry
his notes, a pen and paper, and nothing more.

“If he starts reading I think he will be stopped pretty soon,” Mr
Gron said. “But after that, if he speaks he’s going to talk for five
days. And if he talks about the things the police want him to talk about,
they will allow him to do so.”

Marit Nybakk, a senior member of Norway’s ruling Labour Party on Friday told
The Daily Telegraph of her government’s fears that Breivik would use the
trial to promote his anti-Islamic ideology.

“People now are very taken back by what they see as a kind of
manipulation by Mr Breivik,” she said. “What people are really
afraid of is that he’s getting a show.”

Steps are already being taken to minimise his ability to reach an audience.

A pretrial interview Breivik had been negotiating with the American news
channel CNN was shelved earlier this month, after CNN’s plans were revealed
by Norwegian state television company NRK.

And on Friday night, the Oslo high court ruled that Breivik’s testimony could
not be broadcast on live television.

“We think that’s wrong, because all the police’s claims and everything
that they will do, will be broadcast on television, and the professional
witnesses will be broadcast on television,” said Gron. “We think
it’s wrong that just one part of the case is broadcast on television and
another is not.”

The trial starts on Monday is set to last ten weeks.
