Northern NSW to digital only TV in Nov

About 540,000 households in northern NSW will switch to digital only free-to-air television signals on November 27 this year, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says.

Regions in northern NSW to switch to digital only television include the Hunter, Northern Rivers, North-West Slopes and Plains, and the Richmond/Tweed area by late November.

The government is switching off the analog television signals across Australia between 2010 and 2013.

Senator Conroy said 84 per cent of households in the northern NSW switchover region had converted at least their main television to digital.

He said the conversion to digital television was relatively simple for most households.

“Residents can choose to either connect a set-top box or digital recorder to an existing analog TV or upgrade to a digital TV,” Senator Conroy said in a statement on Tuesday.

Households in northern NSW would receive better pictures and sound as well as 16 channels, up from five, from their digital television.

Those residents unable to receive free-to-air television reception could apply for the government-funded viewer access satellite television (VAST) service from May 27, Senator Conroy said.

He said eligible households could receive extra support through the government’s household assistance scheme across northern NSW from May 2012.

The assistance included the supply and installation of a set-top box, a demonstration of how to use the equipment and where necessary, antenna and cable upgrades if the resident owned their home at no charge to the household.
