The company which operates the freight train, Genesee and Wyoming Australia,
confirmed that two of its 33 wagons were holding chemicals. A spokeswoman
said it was too early to assess the extent of any spill. “Yesterday
they were only able to do an aerial assessment … so they don’t know the
full extent of the damage to the train,” the spokeswoman said.
The territory’s chief minister, Paul Henderson, said the region’s damage was
still being assessed but there had been “significant damage” to
roads.
“We’re hoping the waters recede as quickly as they came up,” he told
ABC Radio.
“Engineers are on site looking at the structural integrity of those
bridges and also the approaches to those bridges, so until those bridges’
waters recede we’re not going to have clear picture as to the structural
impacts and also the approaches.”
