North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Saturday that Merrill Newman, 85, was released on humanitarian grounds, “taking into consideration his admittance of the act committed by him on the basis of his wrong understanding, apology made by him for it, his sincere repentance of it and his advanced age and health condition.”
The 85-year-old arrived in China on Saturday after being freed.
“And I appreciate the tolerance the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) government has given to me to be on my way. I feel good, I feel good. I want to go home to see my wife,” Newman told reporters at Beijing airport.
After the release, US Vice President Joe Biden, who was in South Korea as part of a three-country Asia tour, welcomed the move, saying, “It’s a positive thing they’ve done.”
US State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf also said in a statement, “We are pleased that Mr. Merrill Newman has been allowed to depart the DPRK and rejoin his family.”
Newman was a US special forces soldier during the 1950-53 Korean War. He was arrested on October 26 after visiting North Korea as a tourist.
Pyongyang said Newman was detained for “hostile acts” after entering the country “under the guise of a tourist.”
He was also accused of being a criminal who participated in the killings of innocent civilians during the war.
Last week, KCNA published an apology by Newman for “a long list of indelible crimes against the DPRK government and Korean people.”
