North Korea appoints new army chief

State media said on Tuesday that Hyon Yong-Chol, a veteran field commander, has been granted the title of vice marshal by the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the National Defense Commission of North Korea.

Hyon is now one of the four vice marshals in the nation. Despite the announcement that Ri was relieved of his duties due to health problems, his removal has sparked speculation over the possibility of a power struggle in Pyongyang.

In September 2010, Hyon became a general along with five others, including the country’s new ruler Kim Jong-Un and his aunt Kim Kyong-Hui.

The 69-year-old Ri was one of the key figures who supported the young ruler in his succession to power after the death of his father Kim Jong-Il.
