Some pet owners go to any lengths to pamper their furry friends – but one dog is entitled to feel a million dollars.

‘Emperor’, a Tibetan Mastiff, with his thick double coat, went on sale this week for a staggering 10 million Yuan (£1m).

He
was one of more than 1,000 Tibetan mastiffs from across China appearing
at a two-day dog trade show in Shijiazhuang, capital of northern
China’s Hebei Province, this week.

The average price being asked for one of the dogs was around 1 million Yuan (£100,000).

The
Tibetan Mastiff has become a status symbol in China because they are
thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners’ health and security.

But
his owner believes Emperor is a particularly handsome catch, offering
him out for breeding purposes with a single mating costing half a
million Yuan (£50,000).

The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient breed of dog, originating from the nomadic cultures of Central Asia.

More hound for your pound: if you can't afford £1 million for Emperor, there were plenty of other Tibetan mastiffs going for a mere £100,000

I wonder if they’ll also end up in the dog meat markets of China?

Come on DM this is one of your old stories, in fact I think I saved the picture you printed. Short on new are we.

I have shown and bred Tibetan Mastiffs for over 25 years and I can tell you all for a fact that is no more a pure bred Tibetan Mastiff than I am. It looks like a red pyraneen mountain dog. The Chinese will tell you that they have put “other” breeds into there version of the TM. The TM is actually one of the oldest breeds of dog in the world and now its getting screwed.

Beautiful dogs…..would love to share my sofa with one of those.

I want one…… no i want two.

… and if it doesn’t work, they can always eat them! – Adam Reith, York, 18/2/2012 16:54 ————— Hi Adam, what a brilliant idea! can you please share you York mastiffs casserole recipes please?

Adam, why don’t you keep your foolish comments to you self.

These aren’t PETS these poor animals are a money spinning PRODUCT – just like any other on show. People who breed designer animals do it for MONEY and those who buy them do it for PRESTIGE or whim. If it was animals people REALLY cared about they would home an unwanted sanctuary animal…and neuter them. Buying an animal is playing into the hands of the huge and ugly animal trade. Too many unwanted animals already need homes. STOP the pet trade, don’t contribute because you happen to supposedly ‘love’ labradors, poodles, guinea pigs, budgies, tortoises etc etc. it is abuse of animals to breed them and the public to buy them. Animals should not be seen as a product. Help close down overworked sanctuaries…take on and love an abandoned soul.

………………………It looks like Lenny the Lion !!

Not much to the Chinese, Anelka’s worth £175k a week in China…
