The State Government has ruled out issuing tasers to Tasmanian police officers.

The State Government has rejected calls for all police officers to be equipped with taser guns.

The Police Association wants Tasmania to follow Victoria’s lead and roll out tasers to all officers around the state.

Victoria Police tested the weapon for a year and has now decided to make it standard issue.

Tasmania Police has 11 lasers but they are only for the use of Special Operations Group officers.

Acting Police Association president Robbie Dunn said there had been three police shootings in Tasmania in the past 18 months.

He said tasers would give officers an alternative to a gun.

“It’s been the Association’s standpoint for quite a while that our operations people should have tasers,” Mr Dunn said.

“We think you should have every bit of equipment to maintain our safety as well as the safety of other people in the area.”

The Police Minister David O’Byrne said his advice from the Police Department was tasers were not required.
