No oil flow disruption claims Greek Min.

“At the moment, we have contracts with Iran that are being executed normally,” Greek Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change George Papaconstantinou told Bloomberg in Athens on Thursday.

“We have had no disruption so far, there is no disruption and we do not expect any disruption until the start of the sanctions period,” he claimed.

The Greek minister stated that the most important problem facing Athens was high share of Iran’s crude in total oil imports of Greece which may cause difficulties for the country when European Union sanctions are fully enforced on July 1.

“Greece’s problem is that, because of financing issues, the oil bought from Iran [has] moved to more than 30 percent of our total [imports] from less than 10 percent in the last year,” Papaconstantinou said.

He said other EU members have promised to help Athens find alternative means of getting a secure supply of oil if a problem arises.

Foreign minister of EU states, including Greece, agreed on new sanctions against Iran on January 23, including a ban on importing Iran oil by member states and doing business with the country’s central bank. The sanctions, which aim to pressure the country over its nuclear energy program, will enter into full force on July 1.

In response to EU sanctions, Iran announced on February 15 that it is cutting oil exports to six European countries including Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal.

Tehran added that it will only sell oil to those European companies that agree to strike long-term agreements and guarantee payment.

The Greek minister’s claims come after Fars News Agency reported on February 26 that Tehran has refused to deliver a 500,000-barrel shipment of oil to Greece in response to EU oil sanctions imposed against the country.

According to the report, oil tankers that had come to transfer Iranian crude oil to Hellenic refining complex in Greece were forced to return empty-handed after the Islamic Republic refused to deliver the shipment.
