No need to burn the midnight oil for Naplan tests, says Peter Garrett

WITH the writing and language section completed, more than one million students will attempt their second Naplan test today.

Students in years 3, 5, 7, and 9 will sit the reading component of the test, before finishing with numeracy tomorrow.

The literacy and numeracy tests are in their fifth year but remain an emotive issue for many teachers, students and families.

Federal School Education Minister Peter Garrett marked the start of the testing period at Lynwood Park Public School in Blacktown and said he didn’t want students to feel pressured.

However, publishing exam results on the MySchool website and linking possible pay rises to student performance has left many families feeling stressed. “This is not a pass or fail test and I don’t want principals or parents putting too much pressure on kids,” Mr Garrett said.

“This is about kids doing a test on the things they are taught during the year … and it’s absolutely critical that we understand how kids around Australia are travelling on the basics that count in education – reading, writing and maths.”

Conny Marmont, of Seven Hills, said her daughter was in Year 1 and was already practising for the test still two years away.

She was completing online quizzes at a higher level than was expected for her age, she said.

“We encourage her as much as possible at home,” she said.

“She goes on to all the kids’ websites to do tests online and practice (for Naplan).

“Parents worry about the competition these tests create but it gives the kids motivation and encouragement to do well.”

Mother of three Tracy Barton said her son was being tested for the first time yesterday.

“It’s a good thing for parents to see where their kids are ranked,” she said.

Samir Karmond, of Blacktown, agreed that it was not something that families should fear: “It means they know what areas to focus on in the classroom.”
