‘No limits on boosting Iran-Turkey ties’

“Turkey has a special position among the Iranian nation and officials. This issue necessitates boosting relations between the two countries,” said Rahimi in a meeting with the visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran on Wednesday.

He called on Iranian and Turkish officials to make joint efforts to achieve objectives set by both sides to expand trade exchanges to the target level of 30 billion dollars.

Erdogan, for his part, called for the expansion of mutual and international ties with Iran in all fields.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Rahimi said Iran welcomed Turkey’s offer to host a fresh round of talks between Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1).

Iran’s position on the use of peaceful nuclear energy is clear to all countries. Turkey is better aware than other states regarding Tehran’s transparent policies on the nuclear issue, thanks to its close and amicable ties with Tehran, the vice president stated.

He added that according to Islamic principles, as clarified by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iran has no plans or use for non-peaceful objectives of the nuclear technology.

This is while the West is bent on monopolizing the nuclear energy technology in efforts to block Iran’s advancement in the field, Rahimi noted.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the new round of negotiations between Tehran and the P5+1 would be held on April 13, adding that the venue for the talks will be announced soon.

“Istanbul has expressed its readiness to host these talks and is still one of the probable options for hosting these negotiations,” he stated.

Iran and the P5+1 have held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in the Turkish city of Istanbul in January 2011.

Tehran says it is ready to resume the talks based on common grounds; however, it has repeatedly made clear that it will not negotiate on any of its nuclear rights.

Iran maintains that, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has every right to acquire and develop nuclear technology for peaceful objectives.
