‘No grand jury for Trayvon Martin case’

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey said on Monday that she will not hold a special closed-door hearing to determine whether to bring charges into Martin’s death.

A grand jury had been set to meet on Tuesday in Sanford. Only first-degree murder cases require the use of grand juries in Florida.

The unarmed 17-year-old Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in Florida in February.

Zimmerman claimed that he had acted in self-defense, saying that the victim slammed his head into the pavement repeatedly before he fired the gunshot. He has not been charged with any crime.

Martin’s family has called for an “imminent” arrest.

An attorney for Martin’s parents said in a statement that he is not surprised by the decision to avoid the grand jury and hopes a decision is reached soon.

“The family has been patient throughout this process and asks that those who support them do the same during this very important investigation,” attorney Benjamin Crump said.

The Martin case has led to nationwide protests in the United States and also spurred a debate about race.
