SPEEDY GROWTH: Some 7 million South Koreans, or about 14 percent of the population, are already using smartphones with a faster, fourth-generation wireless technology called LTE. That is forecast to jump to about 30 percent of South Koreans within a few months.
COMPARISON: The United States already eclipses South Korea in the number of LTE smartphone users, but the proportion in the U.S. is less than 5 percent.
SIGNIFICANCE: That explosive growth means that by next year, most South Korean mobile phone users will be able to download multimedia content and stream videos at a faster speed than other countries.
