‘News Int. journalists attempt suicide’

According to three sources close to News International, two journalists working for the Sun Daily have tried to kill themselves, reported Reuters on Tuesday.

The phone hacking scandal is certain to be long-running as eleven journalists at the Sun have been arrested so far.

Moreover, senior police officers and military staff have either lost their jobs or been arrested over their links to the scandal.

Last year, Britain’s most senior police officer, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, and Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned over links to the scandal.

Furthermore, last month, a Ministry of Defence employee, a serving police officer, and a member of the armed forces were arrested along with five senior journalists at the Sun over the allegations of bribing police officers.

The scandal also cast a cloud over decisions made at No 10 when Andy Coulson, British Prime Minister David Cameron’s former communication director, was arrested over allegations of making inappropriate payments to the police.

Last week, Cameron also admitted that he had ridden a horse loaned by the Metropolitan Police to former News International chief Rebekah brooks.

Following the scandal, Cameron set up the Leveson Inquiry to investigate press standards and ethics. News International’s parent company, News Corporation, also set up the Management and Standards Committee to assist the police in their investigation.

However, journalists have said they feel betrayed as they think the investigation is targeted at them as part of the cover-up.

“They’re beyond angry – there’s an utter sense of betrayal, not just with the organization but with a general lynch-mob hysteria,” Reuters quoted a News International employee as saying.
