Newman wants to crush all foes: Qld ALP

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has been accused of trying to stifle all opposition with a plan to stem the flow of union money to the Labor Party.

The state’s new Liberal National Party (LNP) premier will consider preventing unions from giving members’ money to the ALP, or any other political party, without the consent of members.

Mr Newman says Labor’s financial problems are a matter for the party to sort out.

“Queensland workers will not have to pay more for Labor’s failures,” he told parliament on Wednesday.

“In these tough financial times, workers need to know that their unions will represent their needs, ahead of the needs of any one political party.”

The Australian newspaper reports that Queensland Labor has flagged a 40 per cent increase in party affiliation fees for unions.

Labor state secretary Anthony Chisholm says Mr Newman is “hamstringing” his opponents as the move would hit the party’s funding base.

“Why single out unions and not mention other entities like corporations?” he told AAP.

Assistant state secretary Evan Moorhead says Mr Newman has been itching to use his majority to oppress Labor.

“I’m sure he’s looking at any opportunity he can to stifle any effective opposition in Queensland,” Mr Moorhead told AAP.

“He is out to crush those who disagree with him.”

Neither would comment on whether Labor was planning to increase party affiliation fees.

Mr Moorhead only said the party was going through a budget discussion and “a whole lot of options” were on the table.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says Mr Newman’s comments were a disturbing development.

“This is one step short of banning the Labor Party and far beyond what even the Bjelke-Petersen government contemplated,” she said in a statement.
