Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman is expected to face more tough questions on Friday over his refusal to dump a party candidate over his controversial views on rape.
Mr Newman says he and all male LNP MPs will take an oath pledging to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women to mark White Ribbon Day, the national campaign to stop violence directed at women.
This is despite Mr Newman refusing calls to dump the LNP’s candidate for Cairns, Gavin King, after he wrote in 2008 that if a woman drank to excess and was assaulted, she was “partly to blame”.
Mr Newman also urged all other men to swear the oath.
“The challenge we’re issuing to all men is to take this pledge today and to honour it every day for the rest of their lives.”
An online petition calling for Mr King’s disendorsement has attracted more than 4000 signatures, and Mr Newman’s Facebook page was on Wednesday plastered with messages urging him to act.
