Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has scrapped the Premier’s Literary Awards on the grounds that it will save taxpayers money.
A spokeswoman for the premier confirmed the annual awards would not go ahead under the Liberal National Party (LNP) government.
She said the LNP had been clear in communicating its plan to control government spending and return the budget to surplus.
“In light of this, the Queensland Government has decided not to proceed with the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards in 2012,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.
It would save taxpayers at least $244,475, she said.
The awards have been running since 1999.
In 2011, $203,000 in prize money was offered across 14 categories.
