Newman says Queensland needs fresh start

Queenslanders have a choice of more of the same ‘stale’ Labor government or a fresh-thinking, ‘can do’ government, Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman says.

Hundreds of LNP supporters have gathered in Brisbane for the party’s official election campaign launch on Sunday.

Mr Newman has been dogged by more questions about his family’s financial interests and fundraising events charging up to $22,000 to have access to him.

He said he hoped to refocus the campaign.

‘I’m so very proud to say that we are ready now more than ever,’ he told his party faithful.

‘The LNP is a strong and united team.

‘We have the policies, the commitment and the determination to get this state back on track.’

Mr Newman cited his record as Brisbane’s former lord mayor as his credentials to become premier.

He said that under his watch, the Brisbane City Council was able to implement crucial infrastructure like the Clem7 tunnel and was able to keep rates low.

He criticised Premier Anna Bligh for focusing more on her own re-election than what was best for Queensland.

‘Anna Bligh keeps talking about getting her campaign back on track instead of what she’s going to do to get Queensland back on track,’ he said.

‘After 20 long years, they’ve got nothing left.’

Ms Bligh says Mr Newman won’t change Queensland for the better.

‘Queenslanders need to really start asking what sort of change Mr Newman wants?’ Ms Bligh told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday morning.

‘It seems to me Mr Newman wants to change Queensland back to the way it used to be decades ago.

‘When anything went for the developers, when there was not the right restrictions on politicians and their financial arrangements.’

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Nationals leader Warren Truss also spoke at the campaign launch, outlining Labor’s flaws.

Mr Newman used the launch to announce several new policies, including an overhaul of the state’s child protection system.

He said the plan would involve a focus on front line services and support for child safety staff.

‘We want Queensland to be the safest place in Australia to raise a child,’ he said.

Mr Newman said an LNP government would contribute $2.5 million over four years to protect children from sexual assault by providing extra counselling, education programs in schools and a regional telephone support line.

He said the service overhaul would be backed by tough new laws against child sex offenders.

‘We will have a two strikes policy for repeat offenders who commit serious sex crimes against children,’ he said.

Mr Newman reiterated promises to restore the state’s AAA credit rating and to reduce unemployment to 4 per cent over six years.

He says he will encourage job growth by expanding the payroll tax free threshold by $100,000 a year over the next six years.

‘The LNP is committed to cutting waste and delivering on the basics,’ he said.

He talked about delivering more front line services, including increasing the number of doctors and nurses working at the weekend to cut the emergency care wait time.

An LNP government will also reduce elective surgery wait list and deliver an extra 1300 police officers, he says.

‘Our action plan is about health, it’s about education, it’s about safer roads and better public transport, it’s about delivering for Queenslanders but to deliver we need to restore the government’s accountability,’ he said.

‘We need to stop the waste, stop the talk and to end the political circuses.’

He highlighted the government’s health payroll debacle and the millions of health dollars stolen by a fake Tahitian prince as massive failings.

But he says Ms Bligh’s biggest failing was for never holding ‘one single minister to account.’
