LNP leader Campbell Newman will be hoping to reset his campaign today when the party holds its official campaign launch.

The second week of the campaign was a tough one for Mr Newman, who was dogged by more questions about his stance on same-sex civil unions, his family’s financial interests and fundraising events charging up to $22,000.

But he will be hoping to put all that behind him when the LNP’s official campaign launch kicks off in Brisbane.

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Nationals leader Warren Truss will join Mr Newman as he attacks Labor’s record in Queensland and outlines his plan for the future.

He will make several announcements, including commitments for regional communities, roads and jobs.

The LNP has announced that drivers involved in high-speed police chases will be fined at least $5,000 if it wins government.

Drivers who evade police would also automatically lose their licence for two years.

Mr Newman says tougher penalties are needed.

“All the police that I’m talking to right now just say that the current laws are a joke, that criminals are thumbing their nose at the people who are out there protecting us and we need to give them the tools to do the job,” he said.

“It’s very, very simple. If you obey the police direction to pull over, then you won’t get fined.”

Fight against drowning

Meanwhile, Anna Bligh today is expected to promise more money to help reduce the number of children drowning in the state.

The Premier will spend another day in the state’s south-east where she will promise almost $80 million over the next three years to teach children to swim.

It means 400,000 children under four years of age will be given 10 free swimming lessons.

The lessons will teach toddlers buoyancy and survival skills.

The program would start on July 1 if Labor is re-elected.

Parents will have to sign up over the phone or online to receive a voucher to use at their local swimming class.

Ms Bligh says the latest announcement aimed at teaching children will help save lives.

She has spent much of her time on the campaign releasing education policy and says it will continue to be a key focus.
