Newman given rousing reception in Atherton

Atherton Tablelands residents have rallied behind the Liberal National Party, telling leader Campbell Newman he’s their only hope of getting the region back on track.

Mr Newman enjoyed a cold beer at a community barbecue in Mareeba on Monday night where residents asked the former Brisbane lord mayor about government regulation, upgrading the Bruce Highway and the implications of the carbon tax.

Local banana and avocado farmer Robert Watkins, 28, congratulated Mr Newman on how positive he’d been in the face of “Labor’s negative personal attacks”.

“I probably would have slashed (premier) Anna Bligh’s tyres by now,” he told about 150 people at the Mareeba racetrack.

Mr Watkins said Bob Katter and members of the Katter’s Australian Party had visited the region making a lot of promises. But, he said, the party would not deliver.

He said the region had been without decent political representation for 25 years.

With four days until Queenslanders go to the polls, Mr Newman will travel to Cairns on Tuesday morning.

Premier Anna Bligh is also campaigning in far north Queensland.

She flew into Cairns on Monday night and surprised locals at the Hambo pub in the city’s south when she dropped in for a game of pool with her husband, Greg Withers.

Since announcing on Sunday that she would visit 50 electorates in five days, Ms Bligh has visited seven seats.
