Newly Published Report on the Health Benefits of Omega-3 Suggests Higher and Shared Consumption of the Two Important Fatty Acids of EPA and DHA

A newly published report suggests that, based on current evidence, increasing consumption of either EPA or DHA Omega-3 Fatty Acids would be more compelling than little or no consumption and, further, their combined consumption would be most prudent for cardiovascular health benefits. Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this report, adds when taking this report together with another current review by Harvard Medical School as well as the latest findings by The US National Institutes of Health, a balanced intake of EPA and DHA Omage-3 Fatty Acids would be the most favorable approach to cardiovascular and nervous system health.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) February 20, 2012

A newly published report by Division of Cardiovascular Medicine of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, suggests a combined intake of the two important EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids. Nutri-Med Logic Corp, while agreeing with this report, adds that a growing body of evidence suggests that not only the combined intake of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty Acids would be a more prudent choice but that a combined intake having equal portions of EPA and DHA fatty acids would even offer more comprehensive health benefits.

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital report suggests that EPA and DPA (elongated EPA) are associated with a lower risk of nonfatal cardiovascular endpoints and that EPA alone reduced the risk of nonfatal coronary syndromes in one large clinical trial, whereas DHA omega-3 fatty acids may offer benefits for cardiac arrhythmias (not excluding similar benefits of EPA) and lower risk of atrial fibrillation.

The report further suggests that the Combined EPA+DHA levels are associated with a reduced risk of fatal cardiac events.

Nutri-Med Logic Corp states that the commonality of EPA Omega-3 fatty acids, in this report, makes it a highly valuable nutrient for the cardiovascular health.

Nutri-Med Logic Corp, further, states that while EPA Omega-3 fatty acids are highly important for the cardiovascular system, DHA Omega-3 fatty acids are unique to the nervous system.

According to The University Medicine, Rudolf-Virchow-Hospital, Berlin, Germany, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, DHA Omega-3 fatty acids are the precursor to Resolvin-D and Protectin D-1; whereas EPA is the precursor to Resolvin-E. (Prostaglandins Other Lipid Mediat. 2012 Feb 3)

Resolvins resolve inflammation and thus remain an important target of many investigations such as this recent review by the Harvard Medical School.

Moreover, Protectin D-1 is a potent stereoselective anti-inflammatory molecule with a key role in deterring premature death of neurons.

The brain and the nervous system exclusively use the DHA Omega-3 fatty acids and thus the role of DHA in offering health benefits for the brain and nervous system, from inflammation related neurodegenerative diseases, has been well studies and established.

In a recent but most notable study by the Nutritional Neurosciences, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), titled “Study links low DHA levels to suicide risk among U.S. military personnel,” it was demonstrated that 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day reduced depression and anxiety scores among individuals with recurrent self-harm, by 45%. NIAAA has sought to incorporate Omega-3 into the diet of the U.S. military, especially those in deployment situation, confirming the role of DHA fatty acids of Omega-3 in the brain and nervous system.

While EPA Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for the cardiovascular health, the brain and the nervous system can only accept the DHA Omega-3 fatty acids.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp states that a growing body of evidance, such as this recently published report, is pointing to the importance of combined intake of both DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids. Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that given the role EPA in cardiovascular heath and DHA in brain and nervous system health, the most favorable intake would be a combined intake consisting 50% EPA and 50% DHA Omega-3 fatty acids, in another word, a balanced omega-3 dietary supplement.
