Afterwards Mr Bernard, who tore a tendon his arm in the process of his rescue, told the New York Daily News: “I just prayed that I’d catch her.”
The 52-year-old said he was returning home from work when he was alerted to the unfolding drama by the cries of onlookers.
He added: “I went over there to make sure if she fell I could catch her.
“I thought to myself, let me get over there and catch her. I just hope I don’t drop her.
“I’m not a hero, anybody would have done it. I did it out of normal instincts.”
The New York City Housing Association is investigating the incident. Air conditioning units in New York are required to have barriers which leave an opening no bigger than 4.5 inches in homes with children younger than 10 years old.
