New Vic missing persons unit announced

A new missing persons unit will investigate cold cases in Victoria dating back to the 1970s.

The announcement on Monday was timed to co-incide with national Missing Persons Week.

It will begin by looking at around 70 suspicious missing person reports dating back to the mid 1970s and will monitor all new missing person reports.

It will be led by experienced homicide squad Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Iddles.

“Families and friends of missing persons will now have a direct contact point within Victoria Police, this is something that I believe there is a real need for,” Det Sen Sgt Iddles said in a statement.

“We owe it to all of the victims to do our best for them and to get a result.”

He said the missing persons unit would have a co-ordinated approach to all missing person reports, meaning matters that could potentially be deemed as suspicious would be picked up earlier.

Last year 8036 people were reported missing in Victoria, with more than 4500 of them aged 17 and under and most of these people being found.
