New Syrian defense minister sworn in

The development came on Thursday, when President Bashar al-Assad gave the new defense minister instructions and wished him luck.

Freij, chief of staff of the armed forces, was appointed to the post on Wednesday hours after Rajiha , his deputy Assef Shawkat and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani were killed in a terrorist bomb attack at the headquarters of the National Security Bureau in the capital Damascus.

National Security Bureau chief General Hisham Bikhtiyar and Interior Minister Major General Mohammad Ibrahim al-Sha’ar were also wounded in the terrorist attack.

The terrorist Free Syrian Army (FSA) claimed responsibility for the attack. The FSA has also warned of more violence in the capital in the coming days.

The appointment comes as Russia and China vetoed a UN resolution threatening sanctions against Syria, describing the Western-backed draft as biased.

Russia has repeatedly said that it opposes any military intervention in Syria. Instead, Moscow has drafted its own resolution that calls for all sides to stick to Annan’s six-point peace plan to end the unrest in Syria.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
