The Victorian Government has announced plans to extend Melbourne’s urban growth boundaries.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy says land will be released for development on the outer fringes to the north, west and south-east of the city to house more than 500,000 people over the next 20 years.
The first stage of the plan is the announcement of six new suburbs.
“The new suburbs that we are launching today are all within the urban growth boundary….that was shifted in 2010 under the previous government,” Mr Guy said.
“There is also an announcement today in relation to moving that boundary into areas, some of it which is farmland, some of which is green wedge land.
“But it should be noted these are within growth areas.”
Mr Guy says the new measures will define the way Melbourne’s suburbs and towns grow over the next two decades.
