MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Two new solar energy farms producing electricity in Tennessee, including the state’s largest, are the latest signs of growth in an industry that proponents say is primed to add jobs and bolster electrical grids in rural and urban areas.
Hundreds of industry members gathered this week in Memphis for a solar energy symposium and the dedication of a 1 megawatt solar farm. Industry leaders also met in Stanton, where Tennessee’s largest solar generating facility uses its more than 21,000 panels to harness the sun’s energy to output five megawatts of power.
Politicians came from Washington to tour the facilities, which are generating energy being purchased by the Tennessee Valley Authority and channeled into its electrical grids. About 6,500 Tennesseans are employed in the state’s solar energy industry.
