TCP : Foreign and Irrigation ministers from Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia will a hold a six-party meeting in the Sudanese capital Khartoum Sunday and Monday for talks on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD,) Youm7 reported.
The ministers hope to reach an agreement that governs the results of the technical studies related to the impact of the dam on the Nile basin countries; Sudan and Egypt.
The study will determine the environmental, social and economic impacts of the construction of the dam. In March, the three countries had signed a declaration of principles on the dam, agreeing to safeguard the interests of all three countries.
The three parties will discuss means to implement the declaration of principles signed by the three countries in March; Egyptian Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazi was quoted by Youm7 Saturday.
“The next meeting seeks to develop an appropriate mechanism for the road map to activate the agreement of principles on the ground,” said Moghazi.
Ethiopia said she plans to conclude the first phase of the GERD and announce the storing of 14 billion cubic meters of the Nile water by June 2016.
The Dutch firm Deltares withdrew from a bid to conduct the dam studies due to divergences of roles with the French BRL group and the competence of each firm in preparing the report on the impact of the dam.
Egypt fears the dame, which will be Africa’s largest hydroelectric power plant, will negatively affect its share of Nile water.
