New Prepaid iPhone Plans Compared

When it first came out, the iPhone cost $599 and required a two-year ATT contract. Now the new iPhone 4S is much cheaper and is available on three major nationwide networks. But the retro price tag will soon be returning as the iPhone debuts on prepaid wireless carriers Cricket and Virgin Mobile, with a third (Boost Mobile) rumored but not yet confirmed. Off-contract prices for the iPhone 4S will range from $499 to $649.

So why would anyone pay that much for an iPhone? Because not only do you not have to sign a two-year contract, you also pay lower monthly fees. Here are the deals you can get, on the carriers that will be offering the iPhone, and what sort of coverage and availability you can expect.

Virgin Mobile

By far the cheapest prepaid iPhone plans are on Virgin Mobile’s network, where a $35 per month “Beyond Talk” plan gets you unlimited data and text messaging; $30 per month if you sign up for automatic monthly payments, according to a Virgin Mobile news release. Your data connection gets slowed after the first 2.5 GB per month, and only 300 voice minutes per month are included, but an extra $10 per month gives you another 900. $50 a month (with automatic renewal) grants unlimited voice minutes, and another $15 on top of any plan will let you use your iPhone as a mobile hotspot.

The 16 GB iPhone 4S will cost $649, while the 8 GB iPhone 4 will cost $549. Both will be available June 29 and will use Sprint’s nationwide network.

Cricket

Cricket offers a cheaper up-front price for its iPhone, at $499 for the iPhone 4S and $399 for the iPhone 4. Its unlimited everything plan costs $55 per month, which is only $5 more than a Virgin Mobile unlimited everything plan when it’s set to renew automatically, but Cricket‘s plan seems to have a much more restrictive cap on how much data you can use before your speed’s throttled. Cricket’s website isn’t clear on how much that is, and its customers report being told conflicting things, but it seems to be 1 GB at most.

Cricket uses Sprint’s nationwide network but is only offering the iPhone in a few dozen select cities. It doesn’t give a clear date for when the iPhone will be arriving.

Boost Mobile

Again, there’s no confirmation on whether or not the iPhone will be coming to this prepaid carrier. TechnoBuffalo’s Mark Hearn just says “a trusted source has advised” that it’ll get the iPhone 4 and 4S in September.

Like Virgin Mobile and Cricket, it uses Sprint’s network. Its prices are somewhere in between, since its unlimited everything plan starts at $50 a month but goes down by $5 a month for every six months of consecutive on-time payments, to a floor of $35 after a year and a half. Boost Mobile throttles its “unlimited” data after 2.5 GB, the same as Virgin Mobile.
