New Pakistan prime minister provokes ire by building personal helipad

“This speaks very loudly about the premier’s priorities as well as this
government.” The move will reinforce the perception of a political
elite, with generators, servants and aircraft, isolated from ordinary
families struggling to live without electricity for up to 18 hours at a time.

Mr Ashraf was parachuted into the job after the Supreme Court last week
disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani from the position he had held for four years.

The new prime minister, who is nicknamed “Raja Rental” for his
policy of spending millions of pounds on rented electricity generating
stations, is expected to come under intense pressure from judges who are
trying to reopen corruption cases against the country’s president, Yousuf
Raza Gilani Mr Ashraf, who took office on Friday, has moved into the
premier’s official residence but like previous incumbents is expected to
spend weekends at his private home, a mansion in Gujar Khan, about 14 miles
south of the capital.

He has said that his number one priority will be to end crippling power
shortages which have provoked violent demonstrations.

But since taking office, the blackouts have only intensified.

Details of the planned helipad emerged on Tuesday, with security officials
saying that the alternative was to place 300 roadblocks along a busy
highway, inconveniencing other motorists.

“Senior officials visited the site on Monday to review security
arrangements. A site has already been selected for the helipad and its
construction will commence very soon,” said a police officer.
