Stephen Borders, a 52-year-old police officer, attacked another man in a road rage incident on March 20, 2016. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a Ford Mustang – typical douchebag car – boxed in the driver of a truck. According to Michael Green, the driver of the truck, when he stopped, Borders got out of his mustang, opened the door to his truck and repeatedly punched him in the face. He then ripped him from the vehicle and continued the assault.
The petty misdemeanor assault charge was filed on April 7th but Borders has not been on duty since the incident happened. Instead he has been on paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation. I wonder if he will be required to pay back any of that pay if he is found guilty of battery?
The complaint against Borders states that officers were dispatched to 2400 N. Norris for a report of a public fight the morning of March 20.
Eyewitnesses, including Steve North, the programs director for the Clovis area DA’s office told investigators that he saw a physical altercation and stopped to see if he could stop something from happening. he also told the investigators the driver of the mustang had his arm in the man’s neck and was “really getting after him”.
The report also noted that North tried to tell Borders to stop, that what he was doing wasn’t right; according to him it didn’t have much effect,” the report said.
However Borders and his girlfriend tell a much different story.
Borders claims that Green had tried to ram his vehicle multiple times and tried to kill him. Borders also doesn’t dispute the fact that he punched Green and his own testimony states he “reached up and grabbed the jacket and collar of the guy to get control of him,” and prevent him from leaving the scene. Borders said he remembered swinging on Green as Green punched at him.
His girlfriend, Samantha Jara, says she doesn’t remember Borders punching anyone just shoving Green backward. of course she is going to defend Borders and their stories will match but it will be hard to dispute the eyewitness testimony of an employee of the DA’s office who is already on the record as saying Borders was “really getting after him”.
Borders was not arrested for his actions and was issued a summons to appear on the April 24, 2015. Green faces no charges.
Off duty cops are just as prone to violence as an on duty cop and they are still protected from most repercussions since the people who respond to their delinquencies are their friends and co workers.
Are these outbursts evidence of the true nature of those in law enforcement?
Are double standards for those in a position of authority evidence of a society in decline?
Whatever the answer I know that allowing these thugs to continue perpetuating this type of behavior without serious repercussions will only encourage this type of behavior throughout the enforcement class. One could argue that the police kill so many people, because there is a blanket of impunity for officers who use deadly force and a failure to address these issues has created an environment where violence first has been accepted as the framework for modern law enforcement in America.
