(NaturalNews) The mainstream media is shameless in its hypocrisy and diabolical in its treatment of any political opponent who is a) conservative, and b) viewed as a threat to the liberal/media establishment. Apparently, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, one of the true conservatives running for the GOP presidential nomination, qualifies.
In recent days, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Washington Post, Ann Telnaes, created a Christmas-themed political cartoon portraying the senator’s five- and seven-year-old daughters as monkeys on a leash. Cruz, meanwhile, is depicted wearing a Santa Claus suit holding a crank music box with his daughters’ leashes attached to it. His wife and his daughters’ mother, Heidi, is not in the tasteless drawing.
Not surprisingly, Telnaes won her Pulitzer drawing cartoons that mocked Republicans, specifically, during the 2000 presidential election recount controversy. In defending the indefensible, she wrote a piece for the Post (which was replaced with a message from the Post’s editor, Fred Hiatt), attempting to justify her horrible sleight and blatant hypocrisy in abandoning all journalistic integrity.
“There is an unspoken rule in editorial cartooning that a politician’s children are off-limits,” Telnaes admitted, as reported by Breitbart News. “People don’t get to choose their family members so obviously it’s unfair to ridicule kids for their parent’s behavior while in office or on the campaign trail- besides, they’re children. There are plenty of adults in the political world who act childish, so there is no need for an editorial cartoonist to target actual children.”
Except this one time, Ms. Telnaes?
She went on to say her justification centered around a belief that Cruz includes his daughters on the campaign trail and features them in videos from his campaign – as virtually all presidential candidates who have children have done, including President Obama, who regularly featured his two daughters during his campaigns (and can you imagine the liberal outcry if a cartoonist had depicted his daughters as monkeys – which would be just as wrong by the way?).
And, she tweeted with a campaign video of Cruz, his wife and daughters, “Ted Cruz has put his children in a political ad- don’t start screaming when editorial cartoonists draw them as well.”
Continuing in her column, as Breitbart noted, she wrote:
I’ve kept to that rule, except when the children are adults themselves or choose to indulge in grown-up activities (as the Bush twins did during the George W Bush presidency). But when a politician uses his children as political props, as Ted Cruz recently did in his Christmas parody video in which his eldest daughter read (with her father’s dramatic flourish) a passage of an edited Christmas classic, then I figure they are fair game.
Except that by her own admission a candidate’s kids aren’t fair game for any reason – especially when they are five and seven years old.
For his part, Hiatt stepped up and did the right thing in admitting the paper’s – and the cartoonist’s – mistake.
“It’s generally been the policy of our editorial section to leave children out of it. I failed to look at this cartoon before it was published. I understand why Ann thought an exception to the policy was warranted in this case, but I do not agree,” he wrote.
When he first saw the cartoon, Cruz tweeted out a sarcastic, “Classy. ?@washingtonpost makes fun of my girls. Stick w/ attacking me–Caroline & Catherine are out of your league.”
The next day, however, Cruz released a cartoon of his own creation: It features Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton holding two wiener dogs on a leash, with “The New York Times” written on one dog and “The Washington Post” on the other.
“Seems like a better idea for a cartoon,” Cruz tweeted. “Hillary and her lapdogs.”
