New global alliance launched to save the oceans

“To get the World Bank to admit the oceans are in danger is encouraging. But
we have to remember it is responsible for bad news as well as good – and
is responsible for some of the most egregious mistakes of all time, with
their investments in dams and catastrophic agriculture and aquaculture
projects,” National Geographic Explorer -in-Residence, Sylvia Earle, told
the Daily Telegraph.

“We do need whatever it takes to save the oceans we depend on to breathe. But
let’s see how this alliance works before we start celebrating. I would like
to see the UN [‘s laws governing the seas] work more efficiently and
effectively,” she added.

The Word Bank’s alliance, which will meet for the first time in Washington in
April, was unveiled at The Economist magazine’s two-day World Oceans Summit
in Singapore this week – the first time leading economists, CEOs and select
scientist and NGOs had gathered to “reframe the debate” about ocean
conservation.

However, the summit’s organiser was forced to apologises to 4,300 ocean
scientists over a scheduling clash.

One of the premier events for the international marine science community – the
World Oceans Science Meeting – was held at the same time in the US.

“Media attention on has been diverted away from any cutting edge ocean science
being presented here in Utah,” Professor Holly Bik told the Daily Telegraph.

“We’re all shaking our heads in disbelief. The bad timing of the Economist
summit is simply inexcusable,” she added.

Economist’s Asia Pacific editorial director Charles Goddard ruled out claims
of a conspiracy to prevent the scientists from challenging the private
sector’s first debate on how to keep the oceans profitable.

“We are very, very sorry if the scientists felt excluded. But we never knew
about their meeting,” he said.
