New fuel price board rules promised

Petrol station fuel price boards will be made more consistent and less misleading for motorists, the federal government says.

Federal, state and territory authorities will work together on a national approach to fuel price boards, after an agreement by consumer affairs ministers in Adelaide on Friday.

“Motorists rely on fuel price boards to make decisions about where and then they fill up,” Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury said in a statement.

“But these boards can often be confusing and display different prices and fuel types depending on the service station.”

The first steps will be taken by Treasury and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and state and territory fair trading regulators to develop an information standard for fuel price boards.

More than 50 per cent of 800 respondents in an NRMA survey released on Friday said they had driven into a service station during the past year expecting a certain price – only to find the fuel was dearer than advertised.
