New Fair Trade, Organic Vodka Made of Quinoa Packs Superfood Punch

Farm to glass. That’s how FAIR. refers to its new collection of three Fair Trade organic spirits: a quinoa vodka, a goji liqueur and a coffee liqueur.

At happy hour in the Numi Tea booth at Expo West, Dänny Ronen, FAIR.’s “Brandmaster Flash,” mixed a potent cocktail with the vodka and Numi’s Organic Puer’h Tea.

FAIR. Vodka is the first quinoa-based spirit, produced with French distillers and its certified organic grain is grown by small farmers in the Bolivian Altiplano at the Anapqui cooperative. Quinoa, an ancient super grain is touted for its nutrient rich amino acids and minerals.

So I asked Dänny for a St. Patrick’s Day vodka drink to toast at a green event, thinking a version of Irish Coffee might be in order. Giving it a twist, his colleague Josh Gelfand concocted a cocktail at the Rickhouse in San Francisco by combining a couple of FAIR. Spirits for a tasty treat and decidedly Irish flavor:

FAIR.ly Stout
1 oz. FAIR. Quinoa Vodka
1 oz. FAIR. Café Liqueur
2.5 oz. Guinness Stout
3 drops cinnamon-infused vanilla extract
(Soak a cinnamon stick in vanilla extract for 1-2 days; or just use vanilla extract and garnish with a pinch of ground cinnamon.)

Add the Quinoa FAIR. Vodka to a rocks glass, add ice, top with Guinness. Add vanilla drops, stir lightly. Sláinte!

The FAIR. Café Liqueur is the first Fair Trade certified coffee liqueur, crafted with organic coffee beans from co-ops in Mexico’s Huatusco mountains working with nearly 2,000 small producers. With hints of almond and hazelnut, it won best-tasting liqueur at the New Spirits Awards in 2011.

I’m not so sure that the benefits of Goji berries and Quinoa won’t be counteracted by the alcohol content but you can toast a glass feeling “healthier” that it’s organic, and feel good about the Fair Trade label — and after a few sips of this tasty green drink you’ll be feeling fine. Bottoms up at your next Green Drinks event.
