Nearly half of Georgians shot by police were unarmed or shot in the back


Nearly half of the Georgians shot and killed by police since 2010 were unarmed or shot in the back, a finding that casts doubt on claims that police shootings are always justified.

This was the major discovery that emerged from an exhaustive review of police shootings, the first of its kind in Georgia. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Channel 2 Action News collected and analyzed data on 184 fatal police shootings since 2010.

“It’s very, very troubling,” said one expert interviewed by the AJC. “You can’t just shoot somebody that’s running away from you.”
