Did you know it’s International Technology Upgrade Week? While it may not sound exciting, updating the software on gadgets is essential to ensure they function like they’re meant to.
Video chatting service Skype partnered with Norton by Symantec and TomTom to launch this initiative with the goal of encouraging consumers to update their software more frequently.
“The prime focus of International Technology Upgrade Week is to directly address consumers’ concerns and educate them on the value of keeping their software up to date, especially when many updates are free,” notes a press release from Skype.
Skype also released a survey it commissioned that found 40% of consumers in America, Britain and Germany don’t update their software when first prompted. One quarter of consumers said that’s because they don’t understand the benefits of software updates. The survey also uncovered that men are slightly more likely to make software updates than women.
“While women are the main purchasers of technology, they still rely on men to make the updates for them,” stated the press release. “According to the study, it seems that men upgrade their computer software more regularly than women when prompted to: 56 percent of men indicated they always update their software when prompted while only 49 percent of women said the same.”
Skype, Symantec and TomTom provided tips on ensuring consumers get the free updates for their products, which really are pretty simple and basic. Basically, respond when you’re prompted to update. Skype says automated updates are the way to go, which are turned on by default for users with the most recently updated versions of Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac.
